Catching Up on Context
Understanding the Academy’s complex business rules proved to be very difficult because its departments are so siloed. It took a long time to track down the information I needed to understand the context of this project, but it was worth the effort. The key things to know are:
Weekly screenings are only held at four Academy’s theaters — two in L.A., one in San Francisco, one in New York, and one in London.
Members who have retired from the industry for over 10 years become inactive members who are not eligible to vote. As long as they continue to pay their annual dues, they can still enjoy perks like getting DVD screeners and attending screenings. These members make up a considerable portion of membership.
